October is here — the leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and everywhere you look, there are pumpkins, skeletons, and ghosts smiling back at you. For many, it’s all just seasonal fun. But for those who belong to Jesus, this month carries a deeper spiritual reality we can’t afford to ignore.
What’s Really Going On This Month
While the world celebrates “spooky season,” those involved in witchcraft, the occult, and Satanic practices see this as their most active time of the year. They are not pretending — they are intentionally engaging in darkness, calling on demonic spirits, praying curses, and performing rituals meant to stir chaos, fear, and confusion in the world.
And yet, many believers — even moms raising children in the Lord — go about their days unaware that spiritual warfare intensifies in this season. The enemy thrives when the people of God are asleep.
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” — Ephesians 5:11
The Lie of “Harmless Fun”
Each year, the same narrative repeats: “It’s just costumes. It’s just candy. It’s just fun.”
But if we truly believe that light and darkness cannot mix, we have to ask ourselves: Why participate in something that glorifies fear, death, and evil — even in pretend form?
The enemy is subtle. He wraps darkness in cuteness so that we stop viewing it as darkness. And when our children grow up thinking evil is “just pretend,” we dull their spiritual discernment.
As Christ-following mothers, it’s not our job to make Halloween “Christian-friendly.” It’s our job to guard our homes and train our children to see truth clearly.
What We Can Do Instead
We don’t need to come up with an alternative to Halloween. We need to take a stand — in prayer, in teaching, and in light.
Here are a few ways to lead your children this season:
1. Pray daily over your home, your children, and your neighborhood. Ask the Lord to expose darkness and protect the innocent.
2. Teach your children (in age-appropriate ways) about good and evil. Let them see that the Bible doesn’t shy away from truth, and neither should we.
3. Fast and intercede for the lost. October is a time when many are searching for spiritual meaning in all the wrong places. Pray that their eyes and hearts would be opened to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
4. Shine the light. Use this time to talk about Christ’s victory over the devil and darkness. Let your kids see that we walk in joy and peace, not fear or compromise.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
Standing Firm in Faith
This isn’t about fear — it’s about awareness. As Christ-following moms, we are the gatekeepers of our homes. We cannot cover our children in prayer if we’re unaware of what we’re up against. October is not a month to hide but a month to stand.
So while the world celebrates darkness, be the family celebrates truth. Use this season to remind your children that Jesus has already won. We walk in light, and we don’t need to participate in what glorifies the devil.
Mamas, let’s be alert, prayerful, and full of faith. Let’s choose holiness over hype — and light over lies.
