Rest For The Weary Mama: Learning to Trust The Lord of The Sabbath

It’s been a while since I’ve written here—over a month, in fact. Life with little ones has a way of filling every corner of time, doesn’t it? But in this busy season, I found myself in Matthew 12, and God met me with a reminder that stopped me in my tracks:
Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath.
The Sabbath is not a suggestion; it is a command. Yet how often do we excuse ourselves because the season of “littles” demands so much of us? We tell ourselves that pausing isn’t possible—that the laundry, the meals, the teaching, and the endless needs must keep us moving. But if we refuse to rest, we miss the very heart of what Jesus came to give us.
Rest is not about inactivity—it’s about trust. When we rest in Him, we confess with our lives that He is enough. That His resurrection power is greater than our exhaustion. That our striving can cease because His work is finished.
Self-care may soothe the surface, but only soul care—rooted in Christ—refreshes us for the journey of motherhood and faith.
What Rest Looks Like in the Season of Littles
Rest in the Lord doesn’t mean a day at the spa (though those moments can be nice). It means pausing, worshiping, and delighting in God—even with little ones underfoot. Here are a few ways moms can practice Sabbath rest in real life:
Worship Together: Put on a hymn or worship song while folding laundry and sing aloud with your children. Let their little voices rise with yours.
Family Prayer Walks: Take a slow walk outside. Point out God’s creation and thank Him together for the birds, the trees, the sunshine.
Sabbath Meal: Prepare something simple, and as you sit around the table, speak aloud one thing you’re grateful for that God has done this week.
Quiet Moments: Even if it’s just five minutes, stop and read a Psalm aloud with your children nearby. Let God’s Word set the tone for your home.
These are not burdens to add to your plate, but invitations to rest in Christ’s presence as a family.
Living in Resurrection Power
The truth is, when we try to carry motherhood in our own strength, we burn out. But when we live in the power of Christ’s resurrection, we overflow with life, joy, and endurance. Our children don’t just need us busy and surviving—they need us resting and rejoicing in Jesus.
So, mama, hear this: you are free to rest. You are free to stop striving. You are free to worship God in the middle of the mess, because the Lord of the Sabbath is with you.
Let’s be women who choose soul care over self-care, worship over worry, and resurrection power over burnout.
This is not just about surviving the season of littles—it’s about living transformed.
And when we live in that rest, our children will see it. They will learn to love it. And they will join us in the joy of worshiping the Lord of the Sabbath.
Rest in Him, mama. And rise in His power.
What is one simple way you can rest in Jesus this weekend?
